'Brothel, 1873'
Brothel, 1873
(Inspired by the phrase 'Lady of the night', from the Brewer's Dictionary of Phrase and Fable).
Lady of the night takes the man of the day
pleases him quickly and on the way she
turns his body outside in,
she peels back thick layers of skin.
Burying her nose deep she takes
his trousers pockets and she shakes
violently as she hopes to find
the secret that these men must wind
up having somewhere deep below
that has allowed them to grow
and reach heights of her darkest dreams
all whilst being, it would seem
people of the darkest kind,
the dullest character, combined
with belly of beer and faces pale
throats full of themselves and ale
Suits of Savile Row and skin
white as sheets so full of sin
Families full of prestige,
title to pass on to the breed
She searches til her fingers bleed,
as she is so desperate to weed
out what it is that these men do
Which means that they need not whore too.
